When the International-Great Northern Railroad passed through Williamson County, James Hutto sold 50 acres to the Texas Land Company of New York for a town site and railroad right of way. The town was incorporated in 1940.

A hippopotamus broke loose and forced the local station master to send this interesting telegram to nearby towns. While this is unconfirmed, the Texas Legislature recognized Hutto as the “Official Hippo Capital of Texas” in 2003. Concrete hippos stand outside homes, businesses and public buildings as a symbol of community pride and sense of humor. Hutto is the only community in the United States to use the hippo as its mascot.
The Hutto Independent School District provides public school education for Hutto, Texas. Nearby institutions of higher learning include the University of Texas, Texas State University, Austin Community College, Temple College and Southwestern University.
