The Causes of Spinal Cord Injuries
A spinal cord injury (SCI) usually occurs when a traumatic event -- for instance, a car or motorcycle accident -- injures cells within the spinal cord or severs nerves that relay signals up and down the spinal column. The most common forms of SCI include compression (caused by pressure on the spinal cord) and contusions (bruising of the spinal cord). Other variations of SCI include central cord syndrome (specific damage to the corticospinal tracts of the cervical region of the spinal cord), and lacerations (severing or tearing of some nerve fibers, such as damage caused by a gunshot wound).
Depending on the age of an individual, the likely cause of SCI can vary. Automobile and other motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause for people under the age of 65. If a person is over 65, a fall is the most likely cause. Other causes include:
- Sports injuries to the head;
- Bullet or stab wounds;
- Driving accidents;
- Electric shock.
The Consequences of Spinal Cord Injuries
Many SCI victims are considered to be paraplegic or quadriplegic. Paraplegics have limited mobility in their legs and lower extremities. They may be unable to walk or control their bladders or bowels, and have impaired sexual function. Quadriplegics have partial or total loss of all of their body mobility below the neck. They suffer the same complications as paraplegics and, additionally, may be unable to use their arms or to breathe without assistance.
Some SCI victims suffer muscle spasms and are sensitive to stimuli. They may
also be more susceptible to secondary medical problems such as bladder
infections, lung infections and bed sores.
In addition to the serious medical
problems and physical limitations that come with spinal cord injuries, SCI
patients often suffer in other areas of their lives. Statistics indicate
that SCI victims are less likely to get married and less likely to be employed
than people without similar injuries.
Why Legal Help is Important for Spinal Cord Injury Victims
Our firm represents individuals, along with their loved ones, who suffer from SCIs. We understand that the injuries suffered can be severe and life-altering for both the victim and the family. We are committed to helping families who are in this difficult situation.
Our experienced attorneys will discuss your situation and go over the legal options available to you. We will also work with insurance companies and other parties involved in your case to make sure your needs are handled properly.
We will determine if someone is responsible for your injuries or your loved one’s death. If someone is found responsible, they may owe you monetary damages, which can include compensatory or punitive damages. Compensatory damages attempt to put an injured person back in the position he or she was in before being injured, (i.e., payment for lost wages, past and future medical expenses, and pain and suffering, etc.). In some cases, punitive damages are also awarded. Punitive damages are given to the injured person in order to penalize wrongdoers and deter others from repeating the offense.
